ABAKUA .

Many of Trinidad’s masking traditions have direct links to Africa, and many African masking traditions were connected to secret societies, these societies came to the Caribbean with the enslaved Africans, and the traditions continued in secrecy throughout slavery, only to re emerge on the streets after emancipation.  Many his-storians will have you believe the enslaved Africans mimicked their French masters in the development of the carnival traditions, as if they had no culture or traditions of their own, but they did, not just in Trinidad but all over the Caribbean and Latin America.
Take a look at the video below on Cuba’s Abakua traditions its origins are in the secret societies of West Africa and  is directly linked to the Cuban musical tradition of Rumba.

Abakua or Abakuá (various spellings are used) is an Afro-Cuban men's initiatory fraternity, or secret society, which originated from fraternal associations in the Cross River region of southeastern Nigeria and southwestern Cameroon. Known generally as Ekpe, Ngbe, or Ugbe among the multi-lingual groups in the region, these closed groups all used the leopard as a symbol of masculine prowess in war and political authority in their various communities. Ekpe and related organizations in the Calabar region were heavily invested in the slave trade emanating from the Bight of Biafra, though high-ranking officials were themselves ultimately captured and sold into slavery in Cuba, where the society re-emerged. The term Ñáñigo has also been used for the organization's members.

The creolized-Cuban term Abakuá is thought to refer to the Abakpa area in southeast Nigeria, where the society was active. The first such societies are thought to have arisen around the port of Havana in the early part of the 19th century, and this remains the main area of Abakuá implantation, especially the district of Guanabacoa in eastern Havana, and in Matanzas where Afro-Cuban culture is vibrant. While Abakuá eventually came to include members of European descent, this was not accomplished without conflict. Abakuá is sometimes regarded as evil malevolent sorcery.

Abakuá members derive their belief systems and traditional practices from the Igbo, Efik, Efut, Ibibio, spirts that lived in the ditey forest . Ekpe and synonymous terms like Egbo, Ngbe, and Ugbe were names of both a forest deity and a leopard related secret society. Robert Farris Thompson, an art historian and African Diaspora scholar, detailed the transformation and reemergence of this fraternal order in his classic Flash of the Spirit.

The rhythmic dance music of the Abakuá combined with Bantu traditions of the Congo contributed to one of Cuba's musical traditions, the rumba. The Calle family of Efo origin supposedly invented the guaguanco, a type of rumba.
Ireme is the Cuban term for the masked Abakuá dancer known as Idem or Ndem in the Cross River region. The masquerade dancer is carefully covered in a tight-fitting suit and hood, and dances with both a broom and a staff. The broom serves to cleanse faithful members of the fraternity, while the stick chastises both enemies and traitors to the Abakuá traditions. Thus, during initiation ceremonies it is called the Erí nBan nDó, while during mournings and wakes it is called AlanManguín Besuá.
Abacuá also describes a group of Afro-Cuban people of the carabalí as well as their style of music and their percussion instruments. Luciano "Chano" Pozo, conga drummer for Dizzy Gillespie, was a member of the Abakwa secret society.

Cheewah reveals 'KING SAILOR'

It's not every day that a mas band or its band leader and designer lets the public see the designs of its King or Queen of the band. Some bands and their designers keep such designs top secret, a tradition that goes back beyond carnival competitions. Usually we (the general public) don't see the mas until its on the Savannah Stage during competition or on the road on carnival Monday and Tuesday.

This is not the case with Strictly Alternative Mas: (S.A. M.)

Last Thursday designer Darren X Cheewah  made public the design on the King of their Trinidad Carnival 2012 presentation 'X' on their face book group page.  The 'King Sailor'  design reveals a massive skull with the iconic sailor cap and a massive red cape with numerous flags with various designs on them. While the design does not give details on the materials being used or the dimensions of the mas, a lot of movement and 'play' can be expected from this King of X.
'King Sailor'  designed by Darren Cheewah.
This design follows the release of  individuals and section leaders that were posted 3 months ago on fb and those of the sections that were released after the band launch. I wonder what the Queen of  X will look like...

THE OLD YARD: A showcase of traditional mas.

I had the privilege of attending this event last year and had a great time, the red, blue, and molasses devils were absolutely fearsome, the stick fighters weren't that impressive, but the tamboo bamboo players and the retro calypso, not to mention the jump up at the end made it a day to remember. If your in Trinidad on the 12th of February, why not head down to The Gayelle of the Department of Creative and Festive Arts, on Agostini Street St Augustine (U.WI.) . The lime will be sweet.

A LOOK AT BRAZIL.

There is a television series called Black in Latin America where Afro American Professor Henry Louis Gates explores the known and not so well known African Latin American of the Americas, to find out more about the ‘black experience ‘in those parts of the world.

Professor Henry Louis Gates
In the episode below,’ Brazil: A racial paradise?’ Professor Gates explores the society that was once the largest slave economy in the world and now has the biggest black population in the world outside of Africa.

Take note in the beginning he says something very important about carnival and Brazils’ African slaves and the roots of Brazils Carnival especially in Bahia where most of the enslaved West African were taken.

'The Slaves who came to South America did not sail alone they brought their religion, they brought their gods and they brought their music'
Basically they brought their culture and with it the root of their carnival traditions. They did not copy their masters like his-storians claim happened in Trinidad, in fact the opposite happened like their brothers in south America the enslaved in Trinidad as well as the rest of the Caribbean practiced their traditions in secrete for years only to unleash it on emancipation day...
The documentary is not about carnival Brazil like all other plantation nations has issues of race and colour that dominates its society even today. Enjoy.

A deeper look into CHAKRA MAS. 2012

The carnival season in Trinidad and Tobago is well underway the fetes are rolling out, the new soca tunes are heating up the air waves, and the levels of raw energy can almost be seen to rise of the streets in the carnival capital that is Trinidad.
As for mas, the big name fun bands are either sold out or selling out while others are just about ready to distribute. But carnival 2012 still has mas bands launching if you thought it was all over think again.
On the high mas end of the spectrum (high mas being costumes designed to a theme and or storyline with a message behind it) there is new band about to enter the carnival arena with a theme and message that can only lift the scope of mas in the 21st century.
The name of the band is 'Eye Mas' and their début presentation is called ‘CHAKRA MAS’
In order to gain more insight about concept and the inspiration behind the mas I posted 11 questions to the band's leader Thorma “Aungkh Nefer Amen” Crawford.

The following was taken from this interview.

11 Questions for EYE MAS

  1.       What is ‘Chakra Mas’?                                                                                                                                     Chakras are spinning wheels of energy; the entire universe is made up of them. This flow of energy is in every living Being. This energy is our natural Being. The celebration of our Natural Being, the free flow of this energy, spinning, pulsating, spiralling, soaring full spectrum, and in Solfeggio frequencies, is ChakraMas.
  2.      Who are the people behind the band?

Bevil Byam and Thorma “Aungkh Nefer Amen” Crawford.
  3. Who came up with the concept? Thorma brings in concepts like Solfeggio frequencies, Mass & Mas dynamics, Full Spectrum Color, Yoga & Mas ...We discuss possibilities, then Bevil leads the creative expression into wearable Costumes.
  4.   What inspired the concept?    Well 1st we were dealing with the “Conscious”  Eye/I theme, as in Eye Am..., hence Eye Mas, that was talk for over a year.  We began to see expressions of this theme in other Bands, pointing toward the general idea.  Ideas that as they were expressed visually, we felt we didn't need to “go there” again.  So we reassessed. I had been working on developing another theatrical project, Dream Mas, with elements of Carnival, sacred geometry, giant dream machines and solfeggio frequencies so I combined the two, Dream Mas with Eye Mas that became Chakra Mas our presentation, and Eye Mas became our production company.  I also wanted to explore ROYGBIV in full colour spectrum,  I said let’s do it!  This meant re-design after re-design, three drafts altogether, to where we are today.  Efficient, beautiful, visually delightful and affordable costumes. Combine this with our approach to working with Soca & solfeggio frequencies.  A very unique experience.
  5.   Who is the designer?  Bevil Byan
  6.  Do you have your eyes on the band of the year title?  Not at all
  7. What size band are you looking at?  700, I believe that falls into the large category this year
  8. What about this band do you think is different from the rest? Our Band is in full spectrum color and our music incorporates house & tribal beats in healing Solfeggio frequencies, if only for mood, we feel our players are in for a unique treat.
  9. What is your mas experience, and that of your team?  I have worked on the development of two Carnival themed musicals, most notably, Carnival Messiah.  ChakraMas, is my first pure venture as a Band Leader in Port of Spain Carnival.  Bevil Byam is a graphic designer by profession and has designed 4 children carnival bands and produced 3 adult bands on St. Maarten, designed and crafted numerous pageant costumes and creative wear in a variety of materials over a 20 year period.
  10. Bands today often already know what theme they are going to come with next carnival; do you have any ideas for 2013?                                                   I do have an idea.  I like how theories of space & time are being reassessed, the shape of things on a cellular
    level.
There is all this talk about Strings...so that's my theme and Band name for next year, Creator Willing... “String Theory.
  11. What direction do you think contemporary carnival should be going in?  All Carnivals/Festivals should incorporate healing,HARMONIC, vibrational frequencies in the music they share, this will positively impact/Harmonize the 10’s of 1000’s that play Mas, globally each year, contributing in my opinion, to World Peace.

If you wish to know more about chakra mas you can get in contact with them via their eye mas face book page. You can also take a look at their pdf  presentation here.
