My very first memory of mas was playing Limbo Dancer in Mt Lambert RC Primary school, the designs were up on a board but my Aunt was a seamstress so she took one look at the mas and made mine for me!
I still have the now embarrassing picture to prove it too.
The next big Carnival memory is Minshall's Midnight robber in 1980.
Watching it on TTT had me awestruck, but it was in 1987 when I knew what i wanted to do......be ah mas man! The Merry Monarch woke something up in me, I was always a creative and imaginative child, but between Peter Minshall, Peter Samuel, and the Merry Monarch dancing on the Savannah stage, the mas man in me was born.
Last Saturday I came back from a trip home to Trinidad, while there, i went into my old scrapbooks of early designs, concepts, notes and thoughts, and came across a collection of newspaper cutouts and letters on Trinidad and Tobago Carnival, I found some of them most informative, I decided to bring some of them with me, to scan and share with you, from time to time in the, TIME MACHINE.
CARNIVAL 1990:
REMEMBER TANTANA?
The first time THE Concept of High Mas and High fashion being married for me was when Minshall brought TANTANA 10 1990.
The band TANTANA was surrounded by lots of hype and newspaper articles,Minshall as always had a lot to say and so did the band.
Here is some of the stuff that was written at the time.
CLICK on the pic if you want to read it.
The hype that preceded TANTANA was the Dominated by the King and Queen of the Band, Tantan that became the Queen of Carnival that year, and Saga Boy, the two costumes may be the most famous costumed couple in the History of Carnival.
THE REST as they say, IS CARNIVAL HISTORY!
