K2K THE HUMAN RACE DECODED.

While never mentioning where they got their ideas from K2K never hid the fact that the fashion industry was the ocean from which their influence and inspirations were coming from "We hope to be those faces to take carnival to a new level by mixing fashion with mas, and expressing mas as a contemporary art form.”

Last year I called K2K the new leaders of the new school because they dared to look outside the little box that is the creativity of contemporary Trinidad Carnival and bring a fresh new, highly stylized look to 21st Century mas. My only real critique of the band however was that the designers took too much from the world of fashion and cinema, that identifying the source was easy and this somehow...devalued the authenticity of the mas, and the creativity of the designers.

This year K2K has gained a rave reviews for the 2013 offering of ‘The Human Race’ and while many admire the craftsmanship in the design there are those who wonder where exactly did they get these concepts from, and there are those who had an idea a long time ago where the whole concept came from but could not identify the designer or designers.

The release of the Nicki Minaj video ‘Va Va Voom’ over the weekend had bloggers and carnivalist alike asking if K2K‘s mas had somehow been ‘copied’or replicated for the video like the ‘Merry Monarch was for Janet Jackson's 'Escapade' video back in the 80’s. Or were such costumes and headpieces already out there?

As a fan of the group ‘Swedish house Mafia’ I am subscribed to their, youtube channel and knew of the 'Greyhound' video long before K2K launched ‘The Human race’, in the video you can see not only the inspiration for the designs but probably the theme too. Once again the twins have not only in my opinion drew too much from a well of inspiration but have taken so much from one source that in my opinion the thin line between inspiration and plagiarism may have been crossed. Not a good look for those who wish to somehow copyright the intellectual property of Mas in Trinidad.

Anyway my investigations came up with the name of costume designer and stylist Andrea de Araujo and short tour of her web site and resume reveals a good bit of her work has inspired K2K, thus far.

K2K's GALA EVENT

The K2K launch published as an event at Queens hall on 9:08:12, and it was indeed my first band launch in Trinidad in over a decade I must admit while I was happy it was a K2K launch the  idea of dressing elegantly or ‘dressing up’ for a launch did bother me a bit, but in the theme of things this was not just a band launch / fashion show it was an ‘event’ so I resisted the rebel in me and went with the flow.
At Queens Hall, I felt this was indeed the theme playing out in real life, or life imitating art imitating life...but just not mine.  Sitting watching masqueraders and potential masqueraders walk in mixed with public figures I noticed a complete absence of music of any sought; I constantly had to remind myself this is not a band launch...it’s an event.

The event started (fashionably?) late as they do and while I walked past the seats reserved for the special people and found a seat I was happy with I could not help but noticed that the audience was made up of about every possible age group, leaning towards the mature, (maybe $ 450.dollar price of the tickets had its part to play with the turnout...) and then the show started.

Billed as a Gala event the show had a dramatic enough start but in my opinion failed to create the drama excitement or general atmosphere a horse race or even a horse race themed show might create.

I somehow looked forward to a show that mixed the best of a fashion show with the best of dramatic band launch with story line plot a protagonist etc, instead the audience was treated to a fashion show...(and if I had to be honestly critical while all of queens hall was used in the production, It seemed no better in execution than some I seen in my school days),while I did enjoy the sound track during the presentation I did take note that there was no soca either...   not even the names of the sections were announced as the costumes came on stage, so the audience had to guess through observation who was horse rider and spectator...depending on who held a crop or wore or posed with a horse head or helmet.

By now we all know the theme of the band and its fractions made up of horse, rider/jockey, and spectator. But this well publicised show did not do much if anything for the theme, while I went to the show with an open mind ready to accept something different I feel an opportunity to captivate and fascinate future masqueraders totally, may have been missed by the show’s lack of storyline or basic information in the names of the sections being announced when the costumes were on stage.

The Mas
From the stylised horse headpieces with golden manes, to riding crops, with gloves and riding boots and goggles all indicate the equestrian theme of the mas, multi layered rhinestone covered dresses, lace covered umbrellas, and top hats reflect the pomp and glamour in the horse races of high society of another period.

This band seems to emulate the bourgeois from launch to costume design; this gave me the impression that this ‘human race ‘ was not a comment on the pressures and misdirected material values of modern society, this was a celebration of  these values   the race was not  the high pressured battle of ambition, goals, and hurdles and but a celebration of high society where even the jockey’s could be spectators, or kings they seemed so ...established, and the horses (our ambitions) have all been achieved...

With this presentation K2K’s mas dances even more than the waters, on the border between high fashion and high mas, leaving some potential masqueraders   questioning the road worthiness of the costumes in terms of comfort and practicality, masqueraders who played with k2k last carnival however, (the ones I spoke too) seemed more positive about the mas and the sections they were interested in or definitely going to play in. Once again the costumes display in construction, and tailoring craftsmanship  way above that of the regular mas band, a quality that will no doubt see K2K claiming more awards on the road come 2013.
The band also echo’s silhouettes from last year’s mas in both the male and female designs, half jackets, caged apparel, skirting for the men , this may be a trademark look of the Norman twins, or a reoccurring  theme that might join the trilogy together,  but when the fashion world is your pool of inspiration such reoccurring  styles can be bypassed.

All said and done, in their launch, K2K have provided another visual spectacular in the ‘Human Race’,  the Norman twins in their second outing  have in my opinion strengthened their grip on the leaders of the new school title, using more vision imagination and originality than any of their contemporaries, they have succeeded in getting other designers and band leaders scampering around their search engines looking for themes and designs in an attempt to add some depth to their presentations and legitimise their presence by contemplating  competing for a title.
A title that is already within the grip of the twins once all goes as planned for them.

BUTTERFLIES BEASTS AND BACCHANAL: HAS FUN BAND TRIBE JUST GOT SERIOUS?

It’s been a long time since Tribe has moved me enough to put my fingers on the keys and say something.  But in this their 2013 presentation, Butterflies Beasts and Bacchanal (BBB) Tribe has attempted a definite change in their game plan, and from what I hear it seems like Tribe want a band of the year title.

Butterflies Beasts and Bacchanal is in my opinion one of Tribes best efforts since Tribal fantasy in 2005. But I wonder is it a real band of the year contender?
While there is no doubt on Tribes commercial success in the past eight years, they even split the band into two with Bliss for those very special people.  Its growth has been slower creatively.

I am of the opinion that the advent of K2K and their open ambition to claim a band of the year title, and their 2012 presentation of fresh ambitious mas in ‘The Waters Seas of Consciousness’, made K2K the new leaders of the new school. And even though K2K was a medium band that came 4th in their category, the Norman twins showed the new generation (including Tribe) the meaning of contemporary high mas, with their mixture of mas and high fashion that was the talk of Port of Spain.

Now Tribe wants to go after the once highly coveted title, a title that historically fun bands deliberately ignored and in doing so devalued.
So now Tribe too has joined K2K in a quest for the Title.

Does this mean that the fun band Tribe just got serious?

Because BBB is comprised of an assortment of butterfly wings, those who know the history are already comparing it to the legendary Papillion of 1982 by Peter Minshall, it seems that any post 80’s mas that appears out of the norm or that creatively stands out from the rest is then Identified with Minshall, this gives testimony to the impact Minshall had on Trinidad’s carnival, especially mas. 30 odd years later Tribe does a butterfly themed presentation, and Papillion is instantly mentioned, Minshall’s contribution seems pyramid like on the Trinidad’s mas landscape in more ways than one a fact that may spell trouble for Trinidad’s carnival...
1982 Papillion:  http://noelnorton.com

In my opinion BBB is more like a modern mixture of both Stephen Lee Heung’s 1976 Band of the year ‘Paradise Lost’ (designed by Minshall) with devils and imps and Papillion with its butterfly wings.

Monarch male: Photo Trinidad Carnival Diary
Tribe’s female costumes comprise of beautiful butterflies, the pretty fantasy mas, which the band is known for. The male costumes being the scary opposites, the beast, the hellish dragons, the threat, (our reality?).  However make no mistake BBB is no Papillion, far from it.

Minshall’s Papillion was more than a butterfly band, it was an epic 19 section narrative done in the tradition of great bands before. Minshall the Social commentator, used the world and its inequities both socially and politically, through satire, and metaphor, drew reference to the butterfly world, and life and death, with sections like ‘The Establishment ‘and ‘High and Mighty’, were you found Tyrants, Conquerors, and Dictators, and of course the forever iconic King of the band, the Man, God, Devil, reflection of ourselves, ‘The Sacred and the Profane’ the 1992 King of Carnival.

While Tribes beautiful butterfly wings of the individuals or frontline may be impressive, the back line of the butterflies and beasts are less impressive and hark back to Tribe 2008 Myths and Magic. Unless the big beasts and butterfly costumes we saw at the launch make up the majority of the band on the road don’t expect the visual spectacular Papillion produced in 82 or a band of the year title either.
THEME
The bands theme/storyline is no epic, at best it’s an allegory for just about every ‘fun band’ on the road, At its worst it sounds like a poorly re-structured version of the ‘Golden Compass’  where each beast has a relationship with a butterfly, instead of each human having its daemon ...
In a land far far away, surrounded by a fortress impenetrable to man, unimaginable to even the wildest most far-fetched of dreams, lies………the Kingdom of Bacchanal. The emperor rules his kingdom with a tight fist, ensuring that all who are within his gates have the best and most exciting existence possible. The emperor’s wild, unruly beasts guard the Kingdom. These beasts roam without mercy, warrant or restraint and would not hesitate to destroy anything or anyone who dares to cross the border. Each beast is subject to and subdued by a beautiful butterfly that manages to quell the fiery rage, and soften them into gentle submission. It is then, when the beasts are united with their counter parts, a beautiful thing occurs……..a unity of the highest degree…… pure and total bacchanal!!

So after the glare and excitement of the launch has passed,
I think Tribe is going to have to bring much more to the table in order to wrestle the Band of the Year title from the grip the Brian Mac Farlane has on it for most of this century. For even when to his critics his mas is not at its best, on the road to date, his mas is the one to beat.
