EVERYTHING IS A REMIX.

Even the Christian Iconography of the Madonna and Child is a remix of Isis and  Horus

In mas we have a saying that goes something like this, “nothing in mas is new”, and that is because if you’ve been around long enough there are always going to be elements in a presentation that you have seen before, because like they also say “nothing in mas is really original”. (It’s all been done before one way or another)

Back in the days when the Island mix Carnival Central forum was indeed a focal point for carnivalist around the world to gather, the term re-mix was used to describe a costume design that was obviously heavily influenced by a design of a previous year, and as a critic in mas like most Trini’s  cries of ‘I’ve seen that already’, or ‘bring something new’ came from just about everywhere and can still be heard on the streets and on the web today, if only because criticism, like mas and calypso, is also a socio/cultural expression of Trini people.

However, any student of the mas game that understands that nothing in mas is truly original or even understands that once you cover a theme that has been covered before, similar paths can and will be taken to get there will also understand what separates one costume from the other.

“It’s not what you do; it’s the way that you do it, that’s what get’s results”

Any way I came across this fantastic series of videos  by Kirby Ferguson entitled “Everything is a remix” it’s highly informative, and if properly understood, can help many a want to be designer out there to develop not only your design skills but also develop your themes, so pay attention as Mr Ferguson takes you to class!
Enjoy!

Woi! Mas Ltd Start there 2012 campaign

Woi ! Mas Ltd, the people who brought arguably one of the most anticipated
and original concepts last year with the celebrated 'SKULLDUGGERY' designed by Sonya Sanchez Arias, have started their Carnival 2012 campaign on facebook  with the letter 'X'.

In a conversation with Peter Samuel yesterday he promised that once again this production will be 'out of the box', and based on the evidence on FB it is possible that the 2012 designs may feature the works of  Artist Daren Cheewah, whose FB profile features this design below, could this be a peek into Woi! Mas 2012?

I'll keep my eyes on this one...

FELA! Hits Sadlers Wells on July 20th

Co-produced by Jay-Z, Will and Jada Pinkett Smith, FELA! opened on Broadway in 2009 to rave reviews, I missed it when it hit London for a short time earlier this year, but its back for six weeks this summer  and I  booked my ticket!!. The musical is based on the life of Nigerian Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti, his music and his controversial  life.
FELA! tells the true story of the legendary Nigerian musician Fela Kuti, whose blend of jazz, funk and African rhythms ignited a generation. Combining dance, theatre and music, FELA! reveals Kuti’s controversial life as an artist and political activist in rousing fashion

Rick Ross: Free Mason

I simply LOVE this track, a lot has been said about Jay-Z and the whole topic, but this track for me closes all cases.

On the message of design.

“Anyone who bothers to be creative and does not necessarily tell the story is probably doing a huge disservice to the world...we definitely want to hear the stories behind the creativity...it’s definitely an integral part in my opinion of any piece of art work”

I love it when a globally recognised name expresses opinions and views that I myself hold. In a lot of mas bands today designers bang designs together for any theme, there is no research behind the concept except for what has been done by someone else, or what was popular in a previous year.

As a result those of us with a trained eye often squirm at the sight of these imitations; costumes stuck together like Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein with no thought or creative expression behind it.

It seems many contemporary designers are strictly influenced by the designer next to him/her regardless if that designer they follow knows what they’re doing or not, and so we look at the mas on the road and ask questions, what is the story behind it, what does it mean, what does it represent, what is it?

The passing of legend Wayne Berkley seems to bring us yet another step into a creative void that Trinidad carnival is becoming. Mas as a form of artistic expression and social transcript is becoming more and more about branding and commercialisation where originality is an afterthought and copycatting formulas is the creativity of the day.

This year already the first band to launch its 2012 presentation for Trinidad features costumes that seem to be drawn from the same template as a Notting Hill carnival band for Notting Hill 2011. What is the story behind that? What was the creative journey the designer/s took to reach that point? What in researching the theme influenced the look of finished product that while not connected in theme seem to be connected in design and influence?

Here’s that Pharrell interview...
