On the 16:09:12, arguably the most
famous milliner in the World, Philip Treacy made his first appearance in 12 years in The Royal Court of Justice at London Fashion week 2012.
For his spring summer collection for 2013, he paid tribute to the late King of pop Michael
Jackson, and the style and power of African women.

According to the 'Evening Standard' Treacy is quoted as saying “The show was homage to the Africanwoman and their sensibility to dress up.”
On show were 37 outfits
owned by the late ‘King of Pop’ Michael Jackson. These were worn with Jackson inspired, Treacy designed hats,by cast of 25 models all
of various Black/Afro backgrounds.
The move has also restarted the question of
why “minorities” are hardly represented in the fashion industry.
Nice move Philip Treacy!

I'm looking at the highlights of the Victoria's Secret fashion show and thinking "damn they got more energy displayed on stage than some of those launches in Trinidad, and they got themes they stick too!"
take note.

IMMORTALS COSTUME DESIGNER EIKO ISHIOKA
I went to see the movie immortals last night, I thought it rocked, Tarsim Singh is one of my favorite directors, and while IMMORTALS is just his 3rd movie (and I have seen them all) like the others it ROCKS!
In costume design he has teamed up once again withe designer Eiko Ishioka, a designer I mentioned a couple post back.
take a look at this clip as she explains her approach to the design of the costumes in this movie.

EVERYTHING IS A REMIX.
![]() |
| Even the Christian Iconography of the Madonna and Child is a remix of Isis and Horus |
In mas we have a saying
that goes something like this, “nothing in mas is new”, and that is because if
you’ve been around long enough there are always going to be elements in a presentation
that you have seen before, because like they also say “nothing in mas is really
original”. (It’s all been done before one way or another)
Back in the days when
the Island mix Carnival Central forum was indeed a focal point for carnivalist
around the world to gather, the term re-mix was used to describe a costume
design that was obviously heavily influenced by a design of a previous year,
and as a critic in mas like most Trini’s
cries of ‘I’ve seen that already’, or ‘bring something new’ came from
just about everywhere and can still be heard on the streets and on the web
today, if only because criticism, like mas and calypso, is also a socio/cultural
expression of Trini people.
However, any student of
the mas game that understands that nothing in mas is truly original or even
understands that once you cover a theme that has been covered before, similar
paths can and will be taken to get there will also understand what separates
one costume from the other.
“It’s not what you do; it’s the way that you do it, that’s what get’s results”
Any way I came across
this fantastic series of videos by Kirby
Ferguson entitled “Everything is a remix” it’s highly informative, and if properly
understood, can help many a want to be
designer out there to develop not only your design skills but also develop your
themes, so pay attention as Mr Ferguson takes you to class!
Enjoy!

IS MODERN MAS SERIOUS OR SOLEMN?
I was watching and listening to this lecture by designer Paula Scher, and after as I do, applied what she said to what I love, Mas. Is modern Mas, Serious, or Solemn? What do you think?
What do you think it should be?
Or does this not apply to the modern Mas designer?
Listen to her, look at this year’s crop of costumes, or costume design in the past ten years, is the modern costume designer solemn or serious?
