MONTANO, MINSHALL, MASSASSINATION !

Yes people it's the triple 'M' threat!
Both the the baddest Soca artist of a generation, and the works of the baddest mas man of another, feature on the baddest blog for the first time in one post!
HA HAAA!
I just liked the sound of  that...but yes Minshall and Montano came together again as part of Montano's winning 2012 Groovy Soca Monarch performance of 'Mr Fete'. The  performance featured the world famous 'Tan Tan and Saga Boy' and a 'sun burst' by Peter Minshall, you also see an appearance of the legendary Calypso Rose and the lovely Rachel Price.

Cheewah reveals 'KING SAILOR'

It's not every day that a mas band or its band leader and designer lets the public see the designs of its King or Queen of the band. Some bands and their designers keep such designs top secret, a tradition that goes back beyond carnival competitions. Usually we (the general public) don't see the mas until its on the Savannah Stage during competition or on the road on carnival Monday and Tuesday.

This is not the case with Strictly Alternative Mas: (S.A. M.)

Last Thursday designer Darren X Cheewah  made public the design on the King of their Trinidad Carnival 2012 presentation 'X' on their face book group page.  The 'King Sailor'  design reveals a massive skull with the iconic sailor cap and a massive red cape with numerous flags with various designs on them. While the design does not give details on the materials being used or the dimensions of the mas, a lot of movement and 'play' can be expected from this King of X.
'King Sailor'  designed by Darren Cheewah.
This design follows the release of  individuals and section leaders that were posted 3 months ago on fb and those of the sections that were released after the band launch. I wonder what the Queen of  X will look like...

Can't Done - 3 Canal 2012 Soca Mayaro Carnival Launch 2012 Trinidad and Tobago

One of my friends sent me the link to this video on facebook. The video is of  Mayaro's 2012 Carnival launch in south east Trinidad. There are some beautiful traditional carnival characters in this video, for me its one of the best videos of the year, it truly captures the spirit of carnival and the wealth in tradition. The music of 3 Canal's cant done only made it sweeter. Great work Trini Mummy  you got my vote with this one!

SALT - Cure for D'Mas Launch Tomorrow.

Earl Patterson’s band SALT the cure for D mas, launches their prophetic presentation for Carnival 2012, called ‘2012 the Living Prophecies.’ Designed by Keith Mc Lean  the band explores the belief of several ancient civilisations that the earth will experience a rebirth in the year 2012, bringing an end to its 4th great year (a cycle of 5000 years ) and starting a 5th cycle called the age of Aquarius.(see the synopsis below.) for more info see their FB page.

some sections from the band L-R,  Hopi Prophesy, Egyptians, Mayans countdown, Rain.

The inspiration for the presentation “2012” - The Living Prophecies, is based on the ancient Mayan, Hopi Indian, Chinese (I Ching), and Hindu societies and religions, all of whom predicted that the Winter Solstice on December 21, 2012 ~ precisely at 11:11 AM Universal Time ~ marks the end of the World’s Fourth Great Year Cycle. It is believed that the world goes through periods of destruction and renewal every 5000 years or so and on December 21 2012 the World is about to enter a new age (The Fifth Great Year Cycle called the Age of Aquarius).

The overall theme of these prophesies is that the Earth will soon go through a great purification. It is predicted that horrific events, natural disasters and destruction will accompany the New Age.

While doomsayers believe predictions will come to past, these ancient prophecies emphasize themes of transformation and renewal for the New Age. It is said that the cycle we are ending is one that is dominated by materialism and egoism. The prophecies warn that the continued survival of the World after 2012 is dependent on the willingness of the human race to observe the Laws of Creation that honor the positive spirit humankind and the interdependence of all life forms.
It is interesting to note that there are no further calendars, predictions, or indications of the continued state of our civilization… as we know it… beyond 21-12-2012.

Darren Cheewah explains the concept of 'X'

Now I will be the first to say even though Peter Samuel did explain some of the ‘X’ concept to me, my understanding of what I saw only went as far as the 21st century Sailor mas, the rest was not clear to me.
Trinidad Carnivals managed an interview with  the designer of ‘Strictly Alternative Mas’ (SAM) Darren Cheewah, who explains the influences on the mas its relation to the traditions of the past and the socio/political issues of today.

There is a good article on Cheewah, X, and SAM on the Trinidad Carnivals blog check it out.
‘X’ launches on Friday 14th of October 2011.
