any of us in the English speaking Caribbean often focus on one if not two carnivals during carnival season, Brazils and Trinidad and Tobago’s.
However in a gold mining town of El Callao in eastern Venezuela,(Bolivar state) a Carnival takes place that is surprisingly similar to ours in Trinidad not just in its carnival traditions but also in reputation, you see the people of Callao call their land the land Calypso!
El Callao was founded around 1853 and attracted many gold hungry prospectors from the Caribbean, seems that many a Trini also went there looking for Gold and planted there the traditions of Trinidad Carnival that you can identify without a doubt.
Looking at the this Carnival that has a local population of just about 2,000 people but attracts about 80,000 revellers one gets the feeling that your looking at a composite of our traditional carnival and our present with a dose of Latin American spice.
Enjoy!
