Our Queen of Carnival: A passion for mas & medicine

The narrator gives his intro, his final entrĂ©e — "Mother of Humanity- the Weeping Madonna from bandleader, Brian MacFarlane's entry for the 2012 presentation, Sanctification- In Search Of, portrayed by Chariss Bovell". She gets her cue and glides gracefully onto the stage to the beat of tassa drums. Her depiction is unusually beautiful, red faced amidst a background of white, emotionally startling but purely fascinating. She carries this heavy 100 lb ensemble with such finesse and flair that it appears almost featherweight. She breathes life into her parade on stage and her facial expressions tell the story behind her Carnival 2012 Queen portrayal. "Who is she?" one newcomer to the Dimanche Gras marvels. "She must be a ballet dancer!" decides another spectator. "No, she is an athlete," argues a seasoned Dimanche Gras attendee. Everyone is amazed not only by the celestial presence of the elegantly designed masterpiece of a costume but by the celestial presence of the Queen herself.

Chariss Bovell
Today, more than three weeks since the Dimanche Gras Show, I learn that the majestic Queen who stole the hearts of fans and the auspicious 2012 Queen of Carnival title is a medical doctor with a passion for dance (not an athlete or a ballet dancer). For this Woman Express Interview, the 31-year-old Maravel resident is retrospective on her divine fate of playing the Weeping Madonna for Brian MacFarlane's 2012 Carnival presentation. "It happened by chance, it wasn't planned. I had registered to play mas with K2K, a new mas band my school friends had brought out for the 2012 Carnival season. Two weeks before Carnival one of my friends told me Brian MacFarlane wanted to meet with me (we never met before). The meeting was to discuss me being Queen for Sanctification. When he asked me I couldn't turn down what I considered the opportunity of a lifetime. I simply had to say yes and the rest was history," declares Bovell. She looks at me wisely and continues, "Many people thought it as blasphemy for a religious figure to be depicted in Carnival. But they didn't understand Brian MacFarlane's rationale behind his 2012 presentation. Sanctification revealed the different ills of society which exist today. The ills we lose ourselves in like lust, crime and other elements plaguing our lives. "The Weeping Madonna" IS THE Mother of Humanity in the story. The mother who weeps for her children as she witnesses their demise. The demise of her daughters to domestic violence, the demise of her sons to murder, she weeps. That was the idea behind the portrayal." A staunch Roman Catholic, she stood her ground and despite the controversy and skepticism surrounding her depiction of the "Weeping Madonna", Bovell embraced the challenge. Before she sits on her sofa in her gallery overlooking her garden she inspects for lizards and frogs commenting on her fear for anything creepy and crawly. How did a medical doctor with a fear for reptiles transform into "Mother of Humanity" on the big stage? This is a trick question as the answer I get uncovers the real Chariss Bovell, the woman behind the red paint and pretty costume.

She tells me that Carnival is in her blood. The graduate of UWI has always been a Carnival baby. Growing up she was exposed to a climate where both parents played mas and enjoyed the different faucets of Carnival. At age two she made her debut on stage (with baby bottle in mouth), her experience at age four being her real debut where she portrayed a cupcake designed by the now deceased veteran mas designer, Wayne Berkley. "I always loved the stage. I felt at home on the stage. When I played the cupcake, I remember Sparrow's song; 'Doh Back back' was out. I loved the song and I refused to come off the stage". For this year's Dimanche Gras, it wasn't a case of revelry though as she assumed a sombre mood as she fit into the character of a weeping mother. The aura of her performance was set by the tassa drums which MacFarlane so expertly chose as her accompaniment and her typically no-nonsense persona also helped in her depiction.
'Mother of Humanity the weeping Madonna'
Grace, poise and elegance. I learn that these qualities come naturally for Bovell because she is a true dancer. She learned modern dance, ballet and tap dance at a tender age from her aunts who taught dance and her father used to take her to Duke Street to dance bele. "My dream was to be a professional dancer but my dad said no to me pursuing it as a profession. He told me, 'dance all you like but you need a profession'. He didn't think T&T culture was serious about dance". This point brings us to another factor which steered her towards the big stage — her desire to follow in her father's footsteps. "I wanted to do the things my dad did. He loved to play mas and so I gravitated towards it. He never played King of the Band but he was always very involved and he steered me in that direction," says the former student of St Joseph's Convent, Port of Spain. Her aspiration to be "just like daddy" also propelled her towards the field of medicine but that's another story. "Daddy didn't want me to become a doctor despite the fact that he is an oncologist. He wished that I had become an accountant or engineer instead but I guess the Lord had other plans for me," Bovell states. Ironically, her passion for Carnival and her passion for medicine are almost the same as she claims that she enjoys the best of both worlds — the allure of the arts and the intrigue of science. Her father shares the same scenario. "It's as if I am split between two worlds but I enjoy them both. My mom is an artist, actually she used to design my costumes when I was younger and my dad has a passion for art as well while performing his role as a doctor. I go to my job at the National Radiology Centre daily and I feel accomplished when I contribute to someone's life and I contribute to the people in my society. When I come back home I use music and my dance to relax," the former pan player confesses. Not your typical medical doctor nor Queen of Carnival, Bovell isn't your typical church attendee either. However, she is a highly spiritual and religious individual. "I played the 2011 Carnival Queen for the Catholic band. My portrayal was 'Eve, of Eternal Light'," she informs me. This statement ushers in my next question: "One year you're Eve, the next year you're the Weeping Madonna. Is it all a coincidence?" She suggests that it may have been a divine coincidence but certainly not a planned decision but she is happy by the direction her mas compass has taken her. "I am a vintage soul. I love Carnival but I believe that it doesn't have to be vulgar and disrespectful to God to be culturally uplifting. It doesn't always have to be a forum for the best wining tune or indecent behaviour. I grew up keeping God as the centre of everything I do. He was there with me in medical school and He was there with me on the stage for the Dimanche Gras. I even said a prayer before I took the stage and I had my family and friends praying for my performance. Carnival is an art that doesn't have to be polluted by the very ills depicted by Sanctification; it can be pure and morally enjoyable." she argues. How can something so carnal be juxtaposed into something so pure? "As in everything, there are good and bad elements. As a doctor I know this all too well. But the people are what make or break the institution. The Health Sector in T&T can be a whole lot better but there are still good doctors and nurses in the sector. Likewise in Carnival, there are a lot of negative features in the greatest show on earth but there are still those out there making the sacrifice to save the true beauty of the festival!"
With the answers to the spectators' questions as to the true identity of the lady in the Weeping Madonna revealed, there is just one more question for the aspiring Medical Specialist/Carnival Queen/Latin dancer — Will she make another graceful entrance onto the Dimanche Gras stage for Carnival 2013? "I intend to play Queen once more, whether my portrayal be along the same celestial path, only time and divine intervention will tell!" Bovell concludes with a knowing smile.

Carnival Monday 2012 with K2K “The Waters – Seas of Consciousness”

It was a last minute decision that I made on the Friday before carnival to play mas in 2012, non of my close friends were playing this year, then there was the question of who I was going to  play with. I had my eyes set on two new bands of 2012. I decided on K2K. Unproven, untested, and other than what you saw on the net Unknown, but I was feeling the mas, and a timely text message from 'Pinky' made my decision complete, I registered on Friday  and the following are moments I captured on Carnival Monday, I hope you enjoy them.

The Other Side Of Carnival

The Other Side of Carnival from Charysse Harper on Vimeo.
The Other Side of Carnival is a 45-minute documentary that explores Carnival's social and economic impact on Trinidad & Tobago.

With more than 60 interviews from professors, medical staff, police officers, government officials, students, tourists, every day locals and more, The Other Side of Carnival is able to highlight that while Carnival is an exciting occasion, it is a festival that creates turmoil, which is not widely visible...or is it just simply ignored?

Known as "The Greatest Show on Earth" by the citizens, this documentary captures the roots of Carnival and how far some go to keep the original idea alive, and how others attempt to integrate change.

Consummating over two years of research and interviews and with the coordination of a multi-national crew (Trinidad & Tobago, US and UK), The Other Side of Carnival does not pass judgment on Carnival in Trinidad & Tobago, but aims to bring an awareness of the type of influence that Carnival has on the population.

A deeper look into CHAKRA MAS. 2012

The carnival season in Trinidad and Tobago is well underway the fetes are rolling out, the new soca tunes are heating up the air waves, and the levels of raw energy can almost be seen to rise of the streets in the carnival capital that is Trinidad.
As for mas, the big name fun bands are either sold out or selling out while others are just about ready to distribute. But carnival 2012 still has mas bands launching if you thought it was all over think again.
On the high mas end of the spectrum (high mas being costumes designed to a theme and or storyline with a message behind it) there is new band about to enter the carnival arena with a theme and message that can only lift the scope of mas in the 21st century.
The name of the band is 'Eye Mas' and their dĂ©but presentation is called ‘CHAKRA MAS’
In order to gain more insight about concept and the inspiration behind the mas I posted 11 questions to the band's leader Thorma “Aungkh Nefer Amen” Crawford.

The following was taken from this interview.

11 Questions for EYE MAS

  1.       What is ‘Chakra Mas’?                                                                                                                                     Chakras are spinning wheels of energy; the entire universe is made up of them. This flow of energy is in every living Being. This energy is our natural Being. The celebration of our Natural Being, the free flow of this energy, spinning, pulsating, spiralling, soaring full spectrum, and in Solfeggio frequencies, is ChakraMas.
  2.      Who are the people behind the band?

Bevil Byam and Thorma “Aungkh Nefer Amen” Crawford.
  3. Who came up with the concept? Thorma brings in concepts like Solfeggio frequencies, Mass & Mas dynamics, Full Spectrum Color, Yoga & Mas ...We discuss possibilities, then Bevil leads the creative expression into wearable Costumes.
  4.   What inspired the concept?    Well 1st we were dealing with the “Conscious”  Eye/I theme, as in Eye Am..., hence Eye Mas, that was talk for over a year.  We began to see expressions of this theme in other Bands, pointing toward the general idea.  Ideas that as they were expressed visually, we felt we didn't need to “go there” again.  So we reassessed. I had been working on developing another theatrical project, Dream Mas, with elements of Carnival, sacred geometry, giant dream machines and solfeggio frequencies so I combined the two, Dream Mas with Eye Mas that became Chakra Mas our presentation, and Eye Mas became our production company.  I also wanted to explore ROYGBIV in full colour spectrum,  I said let’s do it!  This meant re-design after re-design, three drafts altogether, to where we are today.  Efficient, beautiful, visually delightful and affordable costumes. Combine this with our approach to working with Soca & solfeggio frequencies.  A very unique experience.
  5.   Who is the designer?  Bevil Byan
  6.  Do you have your eyes on the band of the year title?  Not at all
  7. What size band are you looking at?  700, I believe that falls into the large category this year
  8. What about this band do you think is different from the rest? Our Band is in full spectrum color and our music incorporates house & tribal beats in healing Solfeggio frequencies, if only for mood, we feel our players are in for a unique treat.
  9. What is your mas experience, and that of your team?  I have worked on the development of two Carnival themed musicals, most notably, Carnival Messiah.  ChakraMas, is my first pure venture as a Band Leader in Port of Spain Carnival.  Bevil Byam is a graphic designer by profession and has designed 4 children carnival bands and produced 3 adult bands on St. Maarten, designed and crafted numerous pageant costumes and creative wear in a variety of materials over a 20 year period.
  10. Bands today often already know what theme they are going to come with next carnival; do you have any ideas for 2013?                                                   I do have an idea.  I like how theories of space & time are being reassessed, the shape of things on a cellular
    level.
There is all this talk about Strings...so that's my theme and Band name for next year, Creator Willing... “String Theory.
  11. What direction do you think contemporary carnival should be going in?  All Carnivals/Festivals should incorporate healing,HARMONIC, vibrational frequencies in the music they share, this will positively impact/Harmonize the 10’s of 1000’s that play Mas, globally each year, contributing in my opinion, to World Peace.

If you wish to know more about chakra mas you can get in contact with them via their eye mas face book page. You can also take a look at their pdf  presentation here.

Salt Cure for the mas "2012- The Living Prophecies"

The band 'Salt Cure for the mas' have put together a dramatic video presentation of their sections of carnival 2012  The living Prophecies. take a look. Take a look at their fb page for more info .

"The video depicts the inspiration for SALT's Carnival Costume Presentation entitled "2012- The Living Prophecies". It is based on the predictions of the ancient Mayan, Hopi Indian, Chinese (I Ching), and Hindu civilizations, which predicted the end of the Forth Great Year Cycle of Humanity on December 21, 2012 . They believed that the world goes through periods of destruction and renewal every several thousand years. The overall theme of these prophesies centers around the great purification of the world. It is predicted that horrific events, natural disasters and destruction will accompany this New Age, which is called the Age of Aquarius. The costumes are designed by well-known Trinidad artist and costume designer, Keith McLean."

K2K ALLIANCE & PARTNERS : The New Cool of the New School

The Yellow Sea.

Not since ‘Tantana’ has high mas and high fashion been merged the way K2K has merged the two with their presentation of ‘The waters seas of consciousness.  With this band as their opening gambit K2K have confidently placed themselves at the very cutting edge of contemporary mas.
In waters the designers Kathy and Karen Norman use the seas as a metaphor of mans consciousness and the evolution that consciousness may take in becoming self aware. Each section is named after a body of water that may have a historical/religious connection to the state of consciousness each section represents.

Unlike the fun bands of today, K2K  make it very clear that  they intend to bring back the old ethos  of story telling through the medium of mas, and reinventing  what they call the ‘ the cinematic  beauty  through choreography  and design’.  Another factor that places K2K at least 3 tiers above the likes of Yuma, tribe and the rest of fabulous fantasy merchants is the fact that they clearly recognise and appreciate the historical significance of the prestigious title ‘Band of the Year’, and boldly state that they intend to win it, a title we all know only the very best of the mas fraternity can claim on the streets of Port of Spain.

Break in tradition:

Unlike the legendary bands of yesteryear, that drew inspiration from epic Hollywood movies, historical events , great civilisations, or the richness of  Trinidad’s own cultural amalgam, K2K has drawn inspiration from some of the most popular and influential designers of fashion, film, and stage today. Looking at the mas of the Norman twins and tracing the possible seas of influence of these creations reveal this pantheon of fashion to us clearly.
Most of the head pieces take the curves and swirls in form, echoing the style of Philip Treacy,  in the sections you can see sprays of Jean Paul Gaultier, waves of Eiko Ishioka and a shimmer of of John Galliano. If there are any influences of any legendary mas designers in this band it is a splash of Peter Minshall in (rage and fury female).

Red sea rage and fury, looks like Eiko Ishioka's
Stargher  King in the movie 'The Cell'.

Looking outside the little box of Trinidad’s modern day carnival for new inspiration is a concept that I have, (as some of my readers say) ‘ranted on’ about for some time now.  It has baffled me over the years as to why none of the multitude of so called designers and bandleaders of the growing number of new bands have never attempted to also draw from the fashion industries extreme designers who’s show’s and avant-garde designs can so easily be transferred to the genre of contemporary mas.

Sea of Galilee.
When the Blog Trinidad’s Carnivals gave me the opportunity to put this question to the Norman twins this as their reply.

To be honest I am not quite sure. However, if “no one ever challenged the status quo everyone would think that the world was still flat”. Thus, we are trying to challenge the ordinary, think outside the box and offer the masquerader something different. Men like Peter Minshall & Wayne Berkeley have set a very high bar in mas making. They have put our generation in the launch pad and it is up to us to take-off and take mas into another arena. We hope to be those faces to take carnival to a new level by mixing fashion with mas, and expressing mas as a contemporary art form.”

These ladies are definitely the pioneers of their generation.

River Jordan.
This is without a doubt is a fashion centric mas, the men’s costumes are tailored in construction, straight lines, buckles and leather straps. The female costumes are powerful and iconic, the artistic eye and abilities of the twins are undeniable, and the costumes are of an extremely high standard, I think this presentation more than that of any of its contemporaries can be called couture mas, that these costumes are well crafted is an understatement.

Saraswati River.
With all the strengths of this debut presentation, from the powerful message of spiritual redemption and self knowledge to its metaphorical aquatic theme, to the decorated body suits and beautifully pleated leggings there is but one chink in this bands proverbial armour.

Looking at the mas I can’t stop thinking designers drew too much from the pools of high fashion.
In their brave rejection of the repetition and mediocrity that is popular 21st century fantasy mas, and producing this fresh, bold, and daring contemporary work, my opinion is that the fashion has overpowered the spirit of the mas, there is rigidity in fashion that is reflected in these costumes, and this rigidity counters the fluidity of both water and consciousness.

It was almost too easy for me to identify the pools of influence, that were used in each section, and while there is nothing wrong in drawing from these pools of influence, drawing a little too much can upset the balance, and the Norman twins  have drawn form some of fashions most iconic images.
While I respect that they are not trying to be anything like the legends that have preceded them I do find that it’s always good to take notes from the greats.

Ncome River.
“... you put just enough for the audience to do the rest of the work, if your too obvious with it you leave them bored...”Peter Minshall on designing the hummingbird. (See Masman)

In 2006 I called Tribe the Leaders of the NewSchool in Trinidad and Tobago Carnival, back then I saw their approach as new and innovative. Today I pass this title to K2K,this band is as fresh as a breeze coming in from the Caribbean Sea, like I said on Face book it’s a shot in the arm that T&T’s Carnival desperately needed. I do hope that this band is seen as a challenge to the rest of the mas fraternity to be brave and challenge the now old tired order that mindless fantasy mas has become.

I truly hope to see K2K on the road for 2012 and many years to come.
If you want to see more of this band  see the website.
